Ack.... received this in my inbox today when you wonder if you disappoint…

and find myself astounded to learn that another child of God feels so exactly what I was trying to describe to my husband last night.

While it feels comforting to know that another person felt as I did, it also feels sad to know that someone else felt as yuck as I did in the moment. To feel such a lack of achievement.

Comforted by my Saviour yet again. I am grateful that He speaks to me through others.

So many false starts this year.

Tried blogging in earnest. Hoped that by trying to commit to writing about specific topics would help...not.

Signed up for things like sewing, etc. in a belief that accountability to a group would help...didn't.

Did achieve some things though.

Purchased a skirt pattern and fabric and made skirts for work...6 more cut out waiting to be sewn for everyday wear. Since I have been working more than I have been home, I am okay with this for now.

Reading my bible is still hit and miss (meaning I am not following any preset schedule), but working night shift allows much more opportunity to both read and pray. Feeling encouraged.

Though I did not achieve the great things with my vegetable garden last year that I had hoped to because of my new work schedule and other demands upon my time, I opted to change over to a perennial flower garden. Grateful for this winter rest, but excited for spring to watch the results. Stuck with plants and bulbs I am familiar with...hostas, lilies, irises, tulips, daffodils, etc. The aim is for this garden to bloom from spring through fall. The beauty of perennials is that they take little care and spread in size without any help from me.

Knitting in dribs and drabs, but I really don't need so many new dish cloths these days seeing as home cooking is less and the dishwasher is doing such a fine job.

No promises for the coming new year. We will see what it will bring. But I'm not giving up the blog. Still reading those of other's pretty much daily, and receiving a wealth of information and inspiration.

Stitching Swap ~ Mug rug and wrap

It sure has been a long time since I last updated here. Finally (due to mail strike) received my swap package from Val in Australia. Yeah! Was it ever worth the wait!

Happy to post a few pictures...

A lovely apron, mug rug with cupcake pin, mug wrap, floss organizer, and Australian money (sample....coloured like Canadian money is).

Floss organizer...never had one of these before. I just might add some floss and hang it as a decoration in my craft room :)

My favourite mug picked up at a garage sale last year. I also have one with a lady bug, but think I like the spider best.

For those of you who may not like spiders, I "wrapped" him up for this shot. Also, note the little cupcake pin...the cutest thing I've seen in a while. Absolutely genius!

Thanks so much Val. Hope you receive my package soon. Crazy postal strike added a lot of anticipation to this swap....mostly wondering if it would ever arrive. It sure provided me with an opportunity to work on my patience :)

Friday Night Sew-In ~ May, 2011

Did not all go exactly as planned. Ended up with a late start, after 9 p.m., but worked till midnight when the bobbin thread ran out and I just did not have the energy or ability to see straight enough to fill it up and finish my doll's bed quilt.

I have been wanting to make a quilt for my son's bed for some time now and found a very fun denim quilt to make. I decided to make one for my granddaughter's doll bed first. This is also part of my pHd quilt challenge.

First thing I had to do was to cut out all the squares...30 x 4inch squares. Then I machine sewed them together.

Will finish it up later this week when I have time to sew again. This is garage sale weekend around here, and this is the first good weather day of my vacation without rain. I NEED to get out and play in the vegetable and flower gardens. Sewing has to wait for now. :)

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...morning sun shining on the trees across the road as seen through the patio door of my hobby room; the sky beyond which is gray and forecasting rain.

I am thinking...about the many things I need to do today, such as paperwork and bills that will keep me from the crafts I wish to do.

I am thankful for...the grace of my Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ who allows me to begin each day anew, and the opportunities this brings.

I am learning...to quilt

From the kitchen...the need to get a new grocery order

I am wearing...my full-length denim jumper with a tee-shirt and cardigan. The usual reversible kerchief upon my head.

I am creating...nothing at the moment...need to catch up with the day to day first.

I am going...to apologize to my son for being moody this morning speaking condescendinly rather than just listening when this was needed.

I am reading...the KJV Holy Bible

I am hoping...to move the dining room table into position some time today now that I have finished painting the floor.

I am hearing...the whir of the fan in my computer

Around the house...things are quiet...

One of my favourite things...the Spring bulbs I planted last Fall are growing...slowly, but still they are growing. I am enjoy the crocus, next will be the daffodils and the tulips.

A few plans for the rest of the week: to begin to work on making the seat covers for my dining room chairs.

One of many miracles of God, is that things like these perennials emerge in the Spring, grow all summer, die back in the Fall, slumber in the frozen ground all winter, and then re-emerge the following Spring. Thank you Lord for your many wonders.

Homekeeper's Journal ~ Being Gentle

In my kitchen this week ….. shredded chicken, shepherd's pie, blade roast, open recipe book just waiting to be used.

On my mind this week … Aging--aging parents, self, children, grandchildren. Isn't it amazing how one thing can be viewed from a positive as well as a negative angle?!

Gentleness is one of the Fruits of the Spirit so as a Christian ….. our lives should produce much fruit, that we be a living testimony for our Lord.

When the Bible says that Moses was the meekest of all men (Numbers 12:3), it reminds me that …. not saying anything speaks volumes in itself. OH! To not feel a need to be seen as right all the time.

The gentle person has died to self, so when I am gentle in situations that cause others to be angry and violent (Proverbs 16:32; 25:28) ….. I know that it is God responding to the situation and not my old sinning self. Hallelujah! Praise God for His grace and mercy!

Knowing that gentleness is not cowardice or lack of conviction (1 Peter 22-23), I am encouraged to …. pray for more of God's will to be worked out in my life...that I may be pleasing in His eyes and not deemed a fool.

Monthly Dishcloth ~ February 16 KAL

Woo hoo...the mid-month KAL has officially begun.

The Bernat Handicrafter cotton yarn I chose to use is:

But anyway, ready, set, cast on... 45sts. larger than my preferred size.

And this is what I have after Day 1 and 14 rows. This little gem is a big seller for Alli. But the actual pattern is still a mystery to me. I find the p1, k1 border a bit tiresome to knit, but that is probably because I knit with the pick & toss method and not the continental method. One day I will learn :)

Looking forward to tomorrow's rows.

Overwhelmed ~ Invitation to a Pity Party

It is one a.m. and I cannot sleep. My head has taken on some thoughts and decided to go on a roller coaster that will not allow me to fall back into blessed sleep. I tried praying, but cannot remain focused...and it is just plain rude for my mind to wander off in the middle of prayer to my Lord.

Clutter, clutter, everywhere. Just when did my To Do lists multiply? It started out all innocently enough, I guess. Make a list of things needing to be done, wanting to do, i.e. set goals and cross them off as they are completed. Okay, easy enough. Then I started the Master To Do list of things that would take longer to complete and put on those things that would take longer than one day to complete...I mean, why have these things cluttering up my Daily To Do list. Then I went on to make sewing to do lists...all those items I wanted to sew or was in process of sewing, which expanded to knitting, which expanded to skills I wanted to learn...gardening, chicken scratch stitchery, sock knitting, books I wanted to read, homeschooling things to read, and curriculum to use, decorating, organizational skills...oh, then on the computer....time spent reading blogs, how-to sites, articles printed off, links saved, favourite sites are pages long, desktop is a wall of icons, more organizational skills needed. Phew!

You see, I am afraid to get rid of anything (no, not garbage)...after all, I kept it because I had a use in mind for it. Projects should be completed not gotten rid of. In all this, the house is continually under renovation. It is a very small house, and we have changed rooms around trying to find the most efficient use of space. In came the boxes. Stuff was boxed up to be organized at a later date. It is okay to laugh at this..I do too. :) Family needs caused us to move for a year...more boxes. Moved back to this small house...more boxes...renovations still not complete...dare I say it, more boxes.

My craft room is a shambles of boxes and bags piled upon each other. This set up is severly cramping my creativeness. I still have unsewn dresses, quilts, tons of UFO's that are just calling me to work on them :) And life moves on and on not waiting for me to catch up.Sometimes I am breathless from trying.

I think what bothers me the most is that I feel as though I am failing (letting down) those I love...Jesus, my husband, my son, friends and family...because my mind and focus have become so cluttered with the day to day and with this overwhelming mess. How can I give anyone my firm focus if my thoughts keep wandering to things left undone. I lack a sense of accomplishment. Rather, my focus is on what is yet to be done.

I know I am not alone in my situation. I know that it can and will be done. I don't want to just throw things away because they are overwhelming in the moment....that would be wasteful and not good stewardship, and not a good example to my son. My lack of focus and organization are not good examples either.

I have tried many different ways...many of which just produced more paper clutter or desktop icons. I guess it is time to stop planning and just do. Perhaps if my focus were all "in the moment" I would see what needs to be done just under my nose, and I would just do it. Perhaps if I just felt a sense of gratitude for completing something rather than seeking a sense of accomplishment...would that fill the void and create a peace in my heart?

The clutter is still there...not much I can do at this hour that would not disturb the slumber of the household. But, my heart and my spirit are just a little bit lighter.

Worry: The Enemy of Faith?

Do you know which sin is the subtle enemy of simple faith? Materialism and greed? Anger? Lust? Hypocrisy? No. All of these sins are certainly our enemies, but none of them qualify as subtle enemies.

The most notorious faith killer in all of life: worry. “For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25).

Being something of a wordsmith, I find the term worry fascinating. To begin with, the word used by Matthew (translated here as “anxious”) is the Greek term merimnao. It is a combination of two smaller words, merizo, meaning “to divide,” and nous, meaning “the mind.” In other words, a person who is anxious suffers from a divided mind, leaving him or her disquieted and distracted.

Of all the biblical stories illustrating worry, none is more practical or clear than the one recorded in the last five verses of Luke 10. Let’s briefly relive it.

Jesus dropped by His friends’ home in Bethany. Martha, one of those friends, turned the occasion into a mild frenzy. To make matters worse, Martha’s sister, Mary, was so pleased to have the Lord visit their home that she sat with Him and evidenced little concern over her sister's anxiety attack.

As Luke tells us, “Martha was distracted with all her preparations” (Luke 10:40). But Martha didn’t have help, and that was the final straw. Irritated, exasperated, and angry, she reached her boiling point, and her boiling point led to blame. “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me” (10:40).

But Jesus was neither impressed by her busyness nor intimidated by her command. Graciously, yet firmly, He said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only a few things are necessary, really only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (10:41–42).

Worry occurs when we assume responsibility for things that are outside our control. And I love the Lord’s solution: “only a few things are necessary, really only one.” What a classic example of simple faith!

All Mary wanted was time with Jesus . . . and He commended her for that. Mary’s simple faith, in contrast to her sister's panic, won the Savior’s affirmation.

Worry and faith just don't mix.

Knitting - Seaman's Cap

Edited on January 15, 2011: Finished hubby's hat last night, exactly like this but brown and white. Just need to darn in the ends so the men can wear them. Thought maybe someone would like to make their own so here is the link to the free pattern I used.

Here is the other project I was working on...a winter hat for my son.

No, the straw hat brim isn't actually part of it...it was just the form I used to display the hat. Now that I am a successful hat knitter I should invest in the head bust I see so many people with. Wonder where you get something like that?

I am so encouraged by my results. I actually completed this hat in a weekend. I am not a fast knitter...but my little darling will have warm ears now.

Dh was also encouraged by my speed in completing this project...the fact that I actually completed it at all probably helped too. He too has asked for one of his own. His will be brown and white...I already had the yarn waiting to be knit up.

Monthly Dishcloths is a Yahoo group where we knit up free cloths twice a month. It is a group of awesome ladies who share their talents and their knowledge. Thanks Andi!

Ok, I'm somewhat behind on this post. I finished it sometime last week when I needed my needles to work on another project but only got around to taking pictures yesterday.

I had a lot of fun knitting this cloth because it was suggested we use more than one colour and to use up some leftover yarn from other projects. Feeling adventurous I did...

The first rows of Day 1

I like the little design in this cloth.

Still need to weave in ends.

This cloth was a little taller than I am used to. I prefer a smaller cloth for cleaning. Too large a cloth is difficult for me to manipulate and often results in me getting wet because of it :-)

All-in-all I enjoyed knitting up this cloth. Thanks Alli from Knitwits Alley. I've purchased a few of her designs and have always been pleased with the results.

I haven't really done much in the way of sewing in the past few years. I have collected patterns and fabric and even gone so far as to pin and cut patterns for aprons, dresses, handtowels etc. So enough whining. I could take it no more and tried my hand at a little sewing last night.

First I tried working on a Christmas present...

This is actually a pre-printed pattern that I bought back in 1993 and never made. I have two that I want to make as Christmas gifts.

I cut out the left, right, and middle sections for the head of one bear...and then sewed the left and right sides together. When I started trying to gather and pin the middle section, I just knew this project was more than I could handle last night :-)

So, still in good spirits, I moved on to another project, also a Christmas gift. An apron pattern...top right hand corner.

I decided to forgo the pockets and the lace trim on the bottom of the apron. This is a pattern that I cut out two or is it three years ago and just never got around to completing. While I am still not complete, I am way closer to finishing than I was. I have sewn the three pieces of the apron together, and just did a plain hem on the bottom.

When I went to work on the top, I realized that I need to find and cut out some fusible interfacing...a chore to find since most of my crafting things are still boxed from our move earlier this summer. I also needed to mark lines and things...and by this time my men were home so it was time to stop for the night.

I am very happy with the little I got done. I am encouraged to continue full steam ahead all this week. I work for Christmas (Saturday and Sunday) so no one is really expecting anything until the week following. Phew! Couldn't we all use just a little more grace in our lives.

Homekeeper's Journal ~ Long-suffering

God has worked in my life regarding patience and long-suffering in these ways …
     by giving me plenty of opportunities to practice :-) Sometimes you need to be careful what you ask for, as you just might get it.

The hardest part of showing long-suffering is …
     talking myself through a sense of "I've done this for x number of times now and so I shouldn't need to have to keep doing it". Is there ever a point where it becomes easy, and where I will feel a sense of contentment?

The most rewarding part of showing long-suffering is …
     knowing that I am doing God's will and in so doing He is pleased with me.

The one kind situation that I have the most trouble showing long-suffering in is …
     areas where I feel taken for granted.

I see how kindness goes hand in hand with long-suffering because …
     when I am being kind, patience is easy to do.

I want others to show long-suffering to me when …
     I am having difficulty with my own patience. This really is when I need it the most, and when extended to me, can change my whole outlook and manner for the day.

God shows long-suffering to me in these ways …
     loving me when I least deserve it.

Ephesians 4:1-4 says …
     I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [There is] one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

This week I will begin to ask God to …
     help me to walk worthy of my status as His child, and that through me, people will see the love of the Lord.

Sometimes I feel a bit of resentment when I...

am preparing and setting for supper while my family is sitting and doing whatever suits them.

Why is it so difficult for me to...

to let the negative feelings of others flow over and off of me instead of picking it up and acting as though it were my own?

1 Chronicles 16:11 tells me to...

SEEK...the Lord, His strength, His face. My focus should be on Him and no where else.

1 Peter 5:8 warns me...

that the devil, my adversary is seeking to remove my focus from the Lord...is seeking to cause me to stumble in this, and is waiting to consume me, to consume my focus should I lose sight of His face.

I am going to pray and ask for strength to...

sharpen my focus upon the Lord, upon His will for me. To wear the down of a duck...to not absorb.

The difficult thing that seems to constantly catch me off guard is...

becoming overwhelmed in the business of the everyday.

James 1:12 says...

that God will, as promised, bless the one who endures temptation.

I am determined to...

Stand fast to my belief, and know that God is with me and I am with Him regardless of whatever may be going on around me.

PSALM 4: Thoughts in the night

1 Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

Heavenly Father, glory be to you who has forgiven my sins, and has strengthened me through my times of fear. Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

Help me to turn from vanity and the lies of a world who would that I turn from You.

How I Recently Experienced God in my Life

Like others, I will sometimes hear or read something, and I just know that God is trying to speak to me through this.

It started last week when my son's French teacher called me at home to say that his homework was not complete (now two day's late), and that he had portrayed an angry attitude when questioned on this incomplete assignment. The child came home and through discussion, the deceptions and the attitude were addressed. The assignment was completed over the weekend.

On Monday, I received a newsletter from http://www.biblicalparenting.org/ titled But I Have to Yell to be Heard (which I blogged about then) in which I saw the verse: O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest though bring me to nothing. Jeremiah 10:24 I must admit that my correction is sometimes done in anger...angry tones, angry attitude, privileges withheld... Forgive me Lord! Teach me thy ways!

Today, I was reviewing some of the other blog entries for WWHW...and I received confirmation that the Lord is using this as an opportunity to teach me. More than one blog mentions the Lord speaking the same message through various sources. The first blog I stopped at was The One Thing, then I visited Swallowing A Moose. Honestly, I had to stop. The Lord is speaking to me about my own attitude and it is time I stopped and listened to his words. O Lord, correct me....

I have been trying to research "real foods" and the principles behind this way of eating. In my search, I found another challenge (I mentioned in an earlier post there would be more to come *grin*)...

Through the month of February, I will receive a daily email containing an assignment to help me in my transition to eating real foods...wholesome, natural, and nourishing foods for myself and my family.

I'm feeling adventurous..and still highly motivated to commit to making changes to my lifestyle in 2010. I am already committed to and working on my relationship with God daily with my daily reading in the bible, thus helping in my transformation to be more like Jesus. I also wish to work on the temple...to make my physical body a better place for the Holy Spirit to reside and teach me to live a life that glorifies God.

My first posting in the Gratitude Community...

1. The beautiful sunshine streaming through my living room window after the dismal gray of the last two weeks. (Actually I pre-wrote this last Friday...today it is raining *grin*)

2. An excellent elementary school teacher available to listen and to share in the ~~trials~~ adventures of raising the 12 year old child.

3. My amazing husband who has a gift for making me feel loved with just a look or light touch.

4. A God who is always there for me...who holds me tight within His palm and will never let me go

5. Living in a country that allows me the freedom to worship my Lord, and Saviour freely and openly with others.

6. Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Thank you Lord!

Words God Has Laid on my Heart to Share

Are you a trusting person? I don't think I am. I think I am a worrier.

There seems to be little that does not worry me. How do I know this? It has been laid on my heart that I do not face trials with a peaceful attitude. My feathers are easily ruffled.

Husband snacks between meals, or has a second helping when I don't think he should...causes me to stress over his health.

Child has to be asked twice to do something, does not follow instructions, has attitude in his face. At 12 he is taller than I and so I forget that he is still just learning, and is not the adult he looks like. I take his lackadaisical attitude personally, as though he is defying me in retaliation to my requests.

Elderly parents fail to take all medications exactly on time...or worse yet, forget an appointment I have told them for the sixth time.

And I stress about household chores that do not go smoothly. I want to show my love for my family in the little daily things I do...clean laundry, a well made bed, a yummy homecooked meal. Not being able to find a recipe yesterday to make the stuffed green peppers for lunch as promised brought tears of failure and shame.

But, God is good, always, and in all things. A Charity Ministries message by Helen Leibee encouraged me to find spiritual answers rather than finding specific applications to my situations. A greater trust in the Lord is where I will find everything I need. As Helen said, if our God created our universe, holds the stars in the sky, and knows everyone and everything...can he not handle our trifles...meals not finished cooking on time, a missing sweater because laundry forgotten in the washer, a missed school bus, an unexpected phone call at a time when you are busy....

Psalm 4:5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.

2 Sam 22:31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.

1 Chron 5:20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.

The Old Has Gone and the New Has Come...

With 2010 here... I commit to making my walk with Him the priority throughout my every day. God, husband, children, others...I desire only to be a faithful servant.

The Holidays are finally over...

I don't kow about you, but for myself, each year I find myself caught up in the Christmas and New Year's frenzy. Try as I might, I love to add my name to the various challenges that crop up on the blogs I visit...I always manage to visit more during December and January.

In December there are all the crafts, gifts, decorating ideas to read about and print off or save on my computer. And then after Christmas are the New Year's resolutions to read and yet more challenges to join. Somehow though, as I miss many deadlines, and begin to reflect upon the last month, I notice that I spent more time reading and joining than actually doing. I always meant to do each thing I lent my name to, or found so very interesting while reading, but the time seems to slip away so fast.

Then, the last two weeks of January I usually spend trying to start anew those challenges I set for myself, and what doesn't get completed now, gets put aside with a reminder to try again when December and January roll around again next. ;-) It is a poor cycle.

All in all, I have found a few new things with which to challenge myself with this year:

1. Memory Monday...to memorize scripture.

2. Menu Planning Monday I will do a little differently. I am in the process of planning meals for the next 60 days because if I don't, I will fail (again), but I will still post my meal plan weekly.

3. Blogging Friends and Bible Reading with Lovella at What Matters Most? When I was working on my bible study, I found myself immersed in the Word daily. I have long wanted to read the bible cover to cover, but find I need encouragement to keep at it on a daily basis. A new year, a new method here.

Saving Foods -- Plastic or Glass?

A belated Happy New Year to everyone. Been busy lately, but now I am back. Need to sit down and work on next weeks MPM and Memory Monday. Have let those slide this week.

Ok, I'm confused. Today I went shopping for a vacuum sealer like this one FoodSaver™ V3460 Vacuum Sealer Kit but then I read Monday Mission: Rethink Plastic Food Storage Containers and Monday Mission: Targeting Plastic Bags. I also read Food for Thought: Plastic Safety for People and Earth. All this has left me wondering if the plastic foodsaver bags would be safe. After all they can be used in the microwave or some are even deemed boilable bags.

So, rethinking my plastic storage containers as well, I came across this article "How Safe is Tupperware?" Not too long ago, I bought a bunch of new Tupperware items. I absolutely love the fruit and vegetable fridge storage containers. One other item I bought was the microsteamer. Now tonight I saw this warning which caused me to search further to find this "Some Tupperware Products do Contain BPA" Only in the base they say...well, that is where the water is, which converts to steam and is soaked into the "pores" of my yummy veggies!

Guess I need to implement a few of my own baby steps to progress here in the kitchen. I have also been canning with mason jars. I read a comment about how plastics are used in the lids...anyone have any research on this? I'll have to look into it further.

Thoughts of Food--Lotte's Lemon Loaf

Hope you had a very Merry Christmas. Have been very busy with meals, housekeeping, and work. Will be back Monday with more MPM. In the meantime enjoy this easy to make and yummy tasting cake.

I was given this recipe from an elderly Czech lady I used to do housekeeping for. She had many, many health problems due to her time spent in Auschwitz (sp?) but, maintained her love of baking and cooking. She was a veritable inspiration to me.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In large bowl, mix together 1 cup milk, 4 eggs, 2 cups sugar, 1 cup oil, 2 cups instant (or regular) flour, 2 tbsp baking powder, ground lemon rind, dash of vanilla and cocoa. Pour all into greased bundt pan and bake 40 minutes. **This cake recipe raises quite a lot. If you are not sure your baking pan is large enough to hold the finished product, be sure to put a cookie sheet under it to catch the overflow....I'm sure you can imagine how I know this *grin*.

Thoughts of Food: MPM

Reflecting lately, I have come to realize that I have once again ceased to make most of my own meals at home. We have begun eating out again at an alarming rate. I guess this time of year also has something to do with it. November brings many birthdays where we take people out to eat. December brings about many get togethers with friends and family and so menus and grocery lists get laid aside for want of time. And food in fridge heads for compost pile as it is transforming into something new and frightening.

So this will be my first menu plan posting. Don't you just love the sense of accountability?

Week of December 21 - 27

This week is a little different as I will work 4 days instead of two so I will create make ahead dinners that just need popping into the oven when I get home.We will be having my parents over for a Christmas "lunch" on the 24th because we have our annual evening church service to attend.

Monday: chili with elbow macaroni

Tuesday: crockpot apple bacon pork chops, sauteed zucchini and sauteed mushrooms

Wednesday: meat loaf

Thursday: Roast turkey with all the fixings.

Friday: homemade macaroni and cheese

Saturday: spaghetti

Sunday: shepherd's pie

Leftovers will of course cover lunches ;-)

Thoughts of Food--Banana Bread

This is another favourite in our house. Since I developed an allergy to eggs I now make two loaves, one for me and one for them. Don't worry, when theirs runs out I do share mine ;-)

Banana Bread (with eggs)
Mix together 1 3/4 cup flour, 1 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, and 3/4 tsp salt. In a separate bowl, cream together 1/3 cup shortening, add 2/3 cup sugar, and continue beating until light and fluffy. Add 2 eggs and mix until smooth. Add dry ingredients alternately with 1 cup (~3) mashed bananas, stirring just enough to combine thoroughly, but do not beat. Turn into greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. Cool for about 10 minutes on rack. Tastes better if don't eat till second day.

Banana Bread (no eggs)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Blend in blender 3/4 cup soft tofu. Pour into bowl an dmin in 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup oil, and 1 tsp vanilla. Add 1 cup mashed bananas. In second bowl, mix together 2 cups flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking powder, and 1/2 tsp baking soda. Beat together, then fold in 3/4 cup walnut pieces if you like. Put in geased pan. Bake 1 hour. This ends up being more cake-like in consistency, ie more moist than recipe number 1.

Well, this was not a successful week for me. I thought I had this passage downpat...but, it looks like I will need to try again for next week. I am not discouraged. I am missing the second line in verse 15 and that set me off for the remainder of the verse. See you next Monday ;-) for another go at 2 Timothy 2:15-16

When Life's Not Fair

How do you handle an injustice? Recently I was talking with a person who had given years of dedicated service to her local church and had suddenly been removed from her position.
The hurt was obvious and deep as she shared with me how unfairly she felt she had been treated.
The advice I gave her is the same I give to myself when I feel another has done wrong to me.

WHAT HAPPENS *IN ME* IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT WHAT HAPPENS *TO ME*.

There are many things which happen to us in life that we do not like. But we are really powerless most of the time, to change our external circumstances. We cannot rearrange someone else's behavior toward us, nor can we undo moments which have brought us harm.
If we keep reliving the untoward event, and devoting endless hours in "appealing the verdict," we will be left spent at the end of the day. Our best recourse is to ask the Lord to change our inner life.
Joseph knew that truth. Rather than rail against his brothers for their unjust treatment of him he decided to concentrate his energies on being the best person for God he could be in the circumstances he was in. Over the process of a lifetime, he was able to live out the indelible truth regarding unjust treatment from another: "Ye meant it for evil, but God meant if for good" (Genesis 45)

OUR REACTION TO THE UNKINDNESS OF OTHERS REVEALS THE DEPTH OF OUR OWN
WALK WITH GOD.

Suppose you held a glass of liquid as you walked toward me, and I carelessly or deliberately reached out and bumped you. Whatever you carried inside the glass would spill out.
That is the way our lives are. When we are bumped whatever is inside comes out.
That is why being filled with the Spirit on a continual basis is so important. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Bump that kind of person, and you will get the personality of Jesus.
In my present capacity I am called upon to assist congregations in resolving disputes. We call such conflicts "church trouble." I have found it impossible to see such conflicts healed when people are waiting for someone else to change. Most of the important changes that need to be made in our world lie within ourselves.
Jesus said that out of the heart come the issues of life. When I find a "saint" who is unkind, critical, or trying to "straighten out the church or pastor," I know I am ministering to someone who has been bumped: and what they are spilling out is the content of a life lacking the Spirit's presence. The Holy Spirit is not filled with hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, faction or envy.

THE LORD HAS GIVEN US CLEAR DIRECTION ON HOW WE ARE TO RESPOND TO THE
PERSON WHO HAS INJURED US.

Our human reaction is to retaliate, blame, and feel self-pity. All these emotions while understandable, lead us down dead-end streets. In yielding to them we permit ourselves to become victims rather than victors.
A fascination passage from Jude says, "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee". (Jude 9) We may not know much about the mystery of the dispute over the body, but we can see the plain spiritual applications: Don't become like the devil when you are fighting the devil. Michael did not slander the prince of all slanderers.
Jesus plainly told us how to respond to bad treatment from another person: We are to love that one.

ACTIONS LEAD, FEELINGS FOLLOW.

Love does not necessarily mean our feelings will be positive: in fact, Christian love means feelings follow actions. Jesus does not say: "Have good feelings toward the other person." In stead He exhorts us to action - "Do Good!"
Here are questions from the Lord's teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. (Matt 5:38-48, 6:12) We must ask ourselves when we are treated unfairly:
Am I returning good for evil? Jesus tells us to turn the other cheek and walk the second mile.
Am I praying for my adversary? Jesus tells us we are to treat our opponent in the same way God himself responds to the just and the unjust - He blessed both with rain and sun.
Am I blessing rather than cursing the one who hurt me? The underlying word for "Bless" literally means "to speak well of." When someone else has injured our hearts, we can think of a lot of mean and unkind things to say. But that is a form of cursing - a diminishment of the other person's character. Watch your tongue and say good things.

"FATHER, FORGIVE THEM."

Am I forgiving the other person of the debt or transgression against me? A wise person defined forgiveness as the odor flowers give when they are trampled on.
People are going to take advantage of us - they did to Jesus. But His opening word from the cross was not one of vengeance, nor did He seek to get even. He prayed, "Father, forgive them" (Luke 23:34).
How are you responding to unfair treatment? Mrs. Charles Cowman said it well - "The opposing force becomes a lifting force if faced at the right angle." And, "The same wind that uproots a tree lifts a bird."
Our ability to rise above the hurt will depend on whether or not we are willing to let the Lord alter us rather than expecting the other person to change. And His way of altering us is to bring us to an alter of commitment where we say: "Lord, Your will be done in my life. Give me the strength to do what You ask of me."

Thoughts of Food--Macaroni & Cheese

Homemade mac&cheese was a favourite of mine all through childhood. There are many versions out there, and I have since tried a few and liked them; though none say "comfort food" to me like my mom's version...mmmm

Ingredients (how much you need depends on your family size)
elbow macaroni (regular or whole wheat)
tomato juice
bread crumbs
cheddar cheese, grated or sliced*

Cook the macaroni according to package directions. In a large casserole dish, create layers: macaroni, bread crumbs,cheese, tomato juice. Keep this up till your dish is full. How much tomato juice depends on your taste. Too little juice and you will have a dry dish, too much and you create soup. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees about one hour till heated through and cheese melted on top.

Hubby loves diced tomatoes with his, the rest of us don't, so I heat a can on the side just for him...

This is a fast, hot meal on a cold night. I have frozen this before...and was still okay, but with how quickly it makes up I don't usually bother and there are rarely leftovers with us anyway.

*(mom used to use the strong old cheddar, but my family doesn't like it)

Research Into Genetic Modification, Part 1

Genetic engineering:

Is the term applied to techniques that alter the genes (hereditary material) or combination of genes in an organism. The cells of all living organisms contain genes. Genes carry chemical information that determines the organism’s characteristics. By changing an organism’s genes, scientists can give the organism and its descendant’s different traits.

For thousands of years**, breeders of plants and animals have used breeding methods to produce favourable combinations of genes. These “genetic engineers” have produced most of the economically important varieties of flowers, vegetables, grains, cows, horses, dogs, and cats. Beginning in the 1970’s, scientists developed ways to reintroduce individual genes into cells or into plants, animals, or other organisms. Such techniques alter the heredity of the cells or organisms.

Uses of genetic engineering:

Researchers have found important uses for genetic engineering in such fields as medicine, industry, and agriculture. Many new uses are predicted for the future.

In industry. Genetically engineered microbes have been used to improve the efficiency of food production. For example, rennin, an enzyme used in making cheese, is produced naturally in the stomachs of calves. By means of gene splicing, rennin can be obtained more cheaply.

In agriculture. Scientists have developed numerous genetically engineered plants. Thousands of genetically engineered plant hormones have been safely field tested under conditions approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Special genes have been engineered into tomato plants to enable them to produce tomatoes with increased flavour and shelf life. Small plants have been genetically engineered to produce small amounts of a biodegradable plastic. Such crops as cotton, corn, soybeans, papaya, and squash have been engineered to resist disease or injury from herbicides, insects, or viruses. Other genetically engineered plants are used to produce antibodies, for potential use in medicines.

Large amounts of a growth hormone found in cows have been obtained from genetically engineered bacteria. When treated with this hormone, dairy cows produce more milk, and beef cattle have leaner meat. Similarly, a genetically engineered pig hormone causes hogs to grow faster and decreases fat content in pork.

In 1996, a group of scientists in Scotland, led by British biologist Ian Wilmut, achieved the first successful cloning of a mammal from the cells of an adult animal. They produced a clone of a sheep, which they named Dolly. Cloning may provide numerous benefits for human beings. For example, livestock of superior quality could be cloned for farmers. Such livestock would yield higher quality meat, milk, and wool. People could also clone animals that produce human proteins and other substances used in medical drugs.

Concerns about genetic engineering.

Despite its many benefits, genetic engineering has caused concern among some people. some sppose genetic engineering because they fear that harmful, uncontrollable bacteria might be produced accidentally. Others worry about possible environmental damage by the deliberate introduction of organisms whose heredity has been altered. some people also question the morality of manipulating the genetic material of living creatures. In addition, the successful cloning of mammals has led many to debate the bossible benefits and drawbacks of human cloning.

In 1976, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued safety guidelines to control laboratory procedures for gene splicing. These guidelines have been gradually relaxed because suh research was proved safe. In 1985, the NIH approved experimental guidelines for treatment of defects in human beings. In 1987, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that transferring genes between species of organisms posed no serious environmental hazards.

In 1997, the USDA amended its regulations on genetically engineered plants. Once plant breeders have shown that a genetically altered plant has no risk for becoming a pest, they can apply to the USDA to obtain nonregulated status for that plant.

The World Book definitely seems to write from a pro GMO standpoint. While I can see their point, things often look better on paper than they do in real life. All things good can be used in a wrong manner. Praise God that He is able to take things meant for evil and bring about good from them.

Buy OP or Heirloom - try to stay away from hybridized or gmo contaminated seeds

Open-pollinated vegetable varieties reproduce themselves in one of two ways: cross-pollination between two plants (via wind, insects or water) or self-pollination (between male and female flower parts contained within the same flower or separate flowers on the same plant). Beets, brassicas, carrots, corn and squash are cross-pollinating, and so require isolation in the field to keep varieties true. Beans, lettuce, peas and tomatoes are self-pollinating, do not require isolation and are the easiest for seed-saving home gardeners to sustain year to year.

Not enough to explode my soul and disturb my sleep.

Just enough to ease some of the pain from my guilt.

I would like to buy three dollars worth of God, please.

I would like to find a love that is pocket-sized.
I don't want enough of God to make me love a foreigner or pick beets with a migrant.
Not enough to change my heart.
I can only stand just enough to take to church when I have time.
Just enough to equal a snooze in the sunshine.
I want ecstasy, not transformation.
I want the warmth of the womb, but not a new birth.

I would like to purchase a pound of the eternal in a paper sack.
If it doesn't work, I would like to get my money back.
I would like to buy three dollars worth of God, please.

I would like to hide some for a rainy day.
Not enough for people to see a change in me.
Not enough to impose any responsibility.
Just enough to make folks think I am OK.

Being a Disciple: Counting the Real Cost (week 1)

I am currently attending an amazing Bible study. This time around we are a small group comprised of four ladies. This allows for more sharing, and a greater intimacy...translated to mean a sense of security to speak, for those of us who may be a bit shy and awkward feeling in a group setting.

My pastor's wife is facilitating the study (yet again, God bless her) and I am always impressed with her leadership abilities. She allows us to stray during our discussions, yet has a real knack to gently bring us back on track. This must be a gift from the Lord...one I don't have ;-)

Back to the study... this book was co-authored by Kay Arthur,and Tom & Jane Hart with Precept Ministries International. It is a six-week, 40 minute, no homework inductive study. I am being very changed by its message.

In Week One we learned that a disciple is a follower, and that Jesus is calling us to follow Him. We are to place ourselves under His authority and learn from Him, become like him in character and to later faithfully transfer this same teaching to others.

If you are a believer, do you remember what you were doing when Jesus first called you to believe on Him? Why did you choose to follow Him? I was seeking to make sense of what was going on in my life at the time. I felt out of control and I was looking for order and for peace. His words seemed to be the right path...actually they were the right path and I do not regret my decision for one minute!

In Matthew chapter 10, we can hear what Jesus has to tell us about following Him. He is very blunt when he warns us that this path to Him will not be easy. Others in our lives are not guaranteed to let us walk this direction with their support and understanding. He instructs us on what/who we should and should not fear, and he spells out exactly what will be the cost of our decision to follow Him. He also says that we will not be alone, and we will be provided for. We are also reassured that God is fully in control and we cannot be separated from Him without His knowledge or permission.

If we react to these readings from a human standpoint it may well seem harsh and unfair, but it does not need to seem reasonable to us. You are an eternal soul and as such you will spend eternity in heaven or hell. Choosing to believe or not believe does not change this reality. Jesus is calling you to be a disciple. Can you hear Him? He doesn't shout, but, His call is insistant. Remember, He loved you first.

The Bridge Builder

To Blog or Not to Blog

Dear Reader,

This is by no means the first blog I have created. I had my first blog here at Blogger in which I wrote of finding Jesus...since deleted. I have had several crafting blogs, also deleted while I moved around trying to find a blogging medium other than Blogger. Some of them have some really fun templates and other gadgets. As well, I have had several homeschooling blogs where I chronicled the adventures of my ds The Bionicle. Now that I am no longer homeschooling I am looking to write about seeking Jesus and learning to live more simply.

I have returned to Blogger because I find it the easiest medium to work with. I feel like I have returned home so-to-speak.

Please feel free to leave your thoughts to any postings. All I ask is that you speak kindly...or I will feel free to edit them. For it is my wish that this blog be a light in the darkness shining on the narrow gate. I am so looking forward to growing wtih you!
